DIA INTERNACIONAL DE LA INFÀNCIA-Webinar FPT

UNICEF Webinar "Leading Minds to discuss COVID 19 , the Infodemic and Fake News"

LeadingMinds to discuss COVID-19,the Infodemic and Fake News

From UNICEF : This golden age of innovation, with a flourishing of new technologies and online platforms, has created extraordinary opportunities for children and young people to enrich their knowledge and information, their social networks, and their solidarity and civic activism like never before. But those same technologies are used, abused and misused to promote fake messages and harm - leading to hate speech, racism, and hostility with often dangerous consequences to democracies, mental health and children and young people. The infodemic that has spread at the same rate as the COVID pandemic has brought this into sharp relief. Why has this exploded in 2020 with data being exploited at an unprecedented level? How can children and young people develop the ability to decipher disinformation and misinformation?

Only 2% of children know how to distinguish truth from lies.

Children believe what their parents believe or make them scare. The problem is to circulate the information, it is not only news, but also videos, etc ... journalists are already more people than just them. Today journalists are needed more than ever. People who want to misinform use the visual theme a lot. How do we build resilience? It will be a complicated issue, it is not just a matter of guaranteed companies. We must be aware that the news runs and interacts with many media at the same time in each nucleus. Children know the news but where is the mother or parents.

Young people are very important, the key is to consider freedom of expression but at the same time learn everything that can lead to risks. we need freedom of expression, we cannot run the risk of hiding information. The challenge of growing up today is an important challenge, tick-tock, snapshat, etc ... are elements that can hurt or harm. We must protect children but also their rights, including freedom of expression, we must teach them to think critically, help them build themselves, we must teach that some images can hurt and know how to use tools without violating human rights, we must raise awareness to companies.

Of the new vaccines we must be prudent. A vaccine is very complex on a bacteriological level. More and more people believe in the vaccine but there are people who think they do not want to take it. One problem is that today there are people who create information for themselves and this is very dangerous. You cannot inoculate the vaccine with this misinformation! The robot that generates the news is delicate and sometimes they are addictive, the capacity of the algorithms is very strong and very addictive, it is very difficult for us to resist and more so in children.

Technology has led us to a dilemma: we have the technologies but they are designed to go very fast and create a model of us very fast that knows more about us than we do and dominates us, the machine that creates a model of who we are and what we are. sells. Disinformation, conspiracy theories, etc. spread rapidly, it is a very fast and strong manipulation. If we do not have facts, democracy suffers to find solutions to problems and crises. Radical ideologies spread very quickly, the rise of technological platforms divides society and very quickly, this is the growth algorithm. We need 12 principles (that we have worked on), more than 230 tactical movements that we can do to prevent that this happens.

BACKGROUND NOTE

The COVID-19 pandemic has precipitated an unprecedented global crisis, with thousands of lives lost, millions of families affected, and with poor and densely populated areas paying the highest toll. Many urban settlements have reacted rapidly and effectively to contain the virus, mostly thanks to first responders commitment, local authorities’ readiness and families confinement collaboration.

Although, shortcomings have been exposed in many urban areas putting extra pressure on the social protection, education, health, and welfare systems, resulting in increased stress for families. Local and regional authorities have a critical task to protect all family members, stall the pandemic and prepare their communities for recovery and strengthened resilience. At the same time, the impact of COVID-19 has re-shaped urban life around the world. Local communities have played a key role in contributing to keeping people safe and maintaining some economic activities.

In this crisis as in many others, the family unit has proven to be one of the main agents for recovery, governance, protection and development within societies and thus cornerstone for the post-COVID-19. If families are these crucial development agents, an adequate environment is needed to facilitate their role. Local authorities should be considered the family unit as an important social agent to respond, recover, prevent and prepare for the ongoing challenges.

The recognition of communities’ value must be maintained beyond the virus outbreak. In the transition to a new sustainable urban normality, local communities must play an expanded role supporting government stimulus packages for employment creation, delivery of essential services, ensuring a green-economic transformation, the provision of adequate shelter and public space and reestablishment of local value chains. The Inclusive Cities for Sustainable Cities project is a worldwide alliance promoted by the International Federation for Family Development that aims to be inclusive of sustainable families by being responsive to their needs in these ten issues, based on 2030 Agenda and Habitat III and under the leadership of the Veneto Region in Italy: Housing, New Technologies, Education, Healthcare, Safety, Clean Air, Transportation, Affordability, Leisure and Tourism, and Vulnerable Families. Their commitment consists of presenting once a year the results in those topics and attending an annual Conference organized to share good practices.

As detailed by the Manifesto signed by all participants in the last annual meeting of the participants in the project, it is necessary to outline the model of a city that places the citizen at the center of its concerns and becomes responsive to the many challenges of the urban future, as a shareable and inclusive city which places family care as the basis for it. The report to be presented in this celebration is a first step towards this design for the future, enriched with lessons learnt during the pandemic.

The new law of the Veneto Region on ‘Interventions to support the family and natality’ is also a good example in the application of those principles.

UNICEF Webinar "‘What the Experts Say - Coronavirus, Children and the Climate Crisis".

‘What the Experts Say - Coronavirus, Children and the Climate Crisis.

UNICEF Description: From March to May this year, the world stood still …the impossible seemed possible. around the world greenhouses gases fell by 17 percent as cities from Lagos to Los Angeles, Lahore to London became quieter, greener and cleaner. It was the right result but for the wrong reason. Has COVID changed climate change? Children – who tread the lightest on the planet – have been trying to take the biggest step forward. Before the pandemic they were on the march around the world and taking action like never before in history. But has COVID-19 now pushed the climate crisis into the shadows and if so, what can be done to stop this existential threat to future generations?

With interventions of: Beth Doherty (Dublin), Dr Vandana Shiva (India), Professor Anthony Nyong (Africa) , Gautam Narasimhan (Unicef NYC).

UNICEF Webinar conference "Leading Minds - What The Experts Say on Coronavirus and Children - COVID-19 & Child Health"

UNICEF Webinar conference Leading Minds - What The Experts Say on Coronavirus and Children - COVID-19 & Child Health., mederator  Sarah Crowe (235 participants, 15 panelistes)

David Nabarro, Special Envoy of WHO DG on COVID

The Covid is being very hard for children. It has come to stay, like HIV, many people will be infected all over the world, it not only kills people but the consequences and the disease are also serious. It is not always easy to have a vaccine, there are many viruses with which there is no vaccine, we do not know if children will be the first to be vaccinated or not, it will go to the group that needs it most, but it cannot know if children will be the first from the tail". Children may have the virus but they can pass it on to the environment and in turn they are the least affected but infect others who are more vulnerable, so it is difficult to say which will be the first group to be vaccinated on the day the vaccine appears .all families are unique and different. She receives many letters from parents concerned about bringing the virus home from school. It is a truly complex issue, I cannot offer a different answer, you have to be realistic. We must know who has the Virus, it is the most important thing. PCRs are technically complicated, it is a super-technological machinery, that is why it is immensely difficult all over the world to do so many PCRs, that is why it is so important to develop rapid tests, they are the test antigens, there will be 120 million doses of this test will be ready In the next 6 months He wants billions of these tests for everyone to do to all schools in the world and Non-Invasive for children will be very important.

Raji Tajudeen, Head, Division of Public Health Institutes and Research, Africa CDC

We must know what proportion of the population of Africa suffers from the virus. We have the problem of asymptomatic infected people. That is why we must have a test. The people most affected have also been the elderly. We must also know if the mobilization of the Virus makes it more virulent or less. Every Tuesday of the week they assess the status of the evolution of the Virus. One reason why in Africa the virus has caused less damage is because they have a lot of experience with other infections in the past, today they have a coordination throughout the African continent that is very positive, also coordination of the continent at the level of Ministries, the community. Engagement is fundamental and is very well established, after Ebola they have learned a lot, cholera, polio, HIV, all of this has prepared them for COVID 19, the role of the private sector is fundamental (it has dedicated an economic part to medical aid), and finally ensure that it is a question of all sectors at the same time, all involved in society and committed.

Heidi Larson, Professor of Anthropology, Risk and Decision Science, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Children have been affected by Covid 19 for many reasons, not just health (lack of socialization, parents at work, etc.). Now the main preventions are already more incorporated in our routines (hand washing, social distance, mask), it is an opportunity to reinforce confidence in the vaccine (when it is ready). The issue is that we do not know how to act in a situation like this, it is new and puzzles us and at the same time it is essential to share among people what we need, to build a "way of acting", we have time to do it until the appearance of the vaccine .we must "build trust in the authorities, in the future vaccine, we must trust the teacher, the family doctors who care for us", we must discard conspiracies, false news, rumors (for example that 5G technology causes the Covid 19), we must work on resilience, we must take care of nutrition, health, take care of ourselves.

Luwei Pearson, Associate Director and Chief of Health Programme, UNICEF

What is in the shadows will be light, in April we saw that something was broken, in May there was a more straight evolution. In India girls were more affected than boys. We must have a global picture of the world of the moment we are in. Why close all schools if perhaps some can remain open. We must analyze where to apply economic and budgetary resources. We must learn from other countries with transparency to improve.

UNICEF WEBINAR, "WORLDS OF INFLUENCE: Shaping policies for child well-being in rich countries - A policy panel discussion"

Today  the  webinar "WORLDS OF INFLUENCE: Shaping policies for child well-being in rich countries - A policy panel discussion", has been taken discussing about indicators amd well-being

Mr. Nicolas Schmit, European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights
We must think that what happens to children, happens in our future. We must be clear that they have lived through the great crisis of 2009 and after 10 years again a very hard crisis, therefore we must be aware of it, that is why education is more important than ever, family, social contacts, They know that it is a period of profound transformation, therefore we must provide them with the correct instruments: this is the challenge. We must create resilient societies, accessible services: education, quality in it, healthcare, sport, leisure, housing, ultimately democratic societies with equal opportunities, we need to know that our children are happy and can overcome difficulties, therefore we must invest in children, if social investment is cut it weakens our potential as companies.

Ms. Denitsa Sacheva, Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Bulgaria
Education and health is very important for us, it is a priority, 40,000 children have gone to school again, much progress has been made in this regard, however we continue to do so, we must work on mental health, disabilities, the focus is now in social services for them, through supporting their families, we need to connect the different services and be more creative for the benefit of the children.
They have invested 2 billion euros in social measures during the pandemic, money to maintain jobs and workers' income (170,000 jobs have been maintained) and this is important for families, we have invested in caregivers so that parents can continue working , have emphasized the 8th grade that it is the time of change for children, and have obtained an economic allowance to improve distance education, and a minimum of monthly money for parents who must be at home with their children and who may have minimal income.

Ms. Rosemary Moodie, Senator, Canada
We must work to reduce child poverty and equality. We have a lot of responsibility and civil society is telling us what to do, we need to listen to them and give the appropriate response, it is not being done and yet there are resources to do it.
In countries with resources, it is difficult to understand that investing in children is very necessary, it must be understood that it is something very important that has repercussions throughout the world of services and economics, 20% of children in Canada are affected by mental illness, this for example it is a major problem.
We must carry out policies for children, it must be on our political agenda, political dialogue, discitur, decide, legislate, we must take seriously the impact on children, listen to children, encourage them to formulate options, we also have vulnerabilities: immigrants, disabled , etc..

Mr. Fayaz King, Deputy Executive Director, Field Results and Innovation, UNICEF
It is essential to invest in children, their well-being is essential, their education, their health, specifically mental health, especially at this time and hence the necessary support for their families.

Mr. Dominic Richardson, Chief of Social and Economic Policy, UNICEF Office of Research – Innocenti
We have to ask yourself about the children's indicators: are they physically healthy, are they socially integrated, also at school, are they happy? .... these are the basic questions we must ask. The challenge is the actions, as well as all the influences that accentuate these indicators. It is essential to recognize that they are part of society, you have to listen to them, ask about their experience, that they do not feel excluded. It is in the pre-crises that not enough work has been done in this regard, we must learn from the past, let's prepare for the crisis before it arrives, if we act like this we will be prepared and we will have more tools for children. Only a small part of social investment is directed to the well-being of children, now it is an opportunity.

Webinar UNICEF Worlds of Influence: Understanding what shapes child well-being in rich countries

Description: UNICEF Innocenti’s Report Card 16 – Worlds of Influence: Understanding what shapes child well-being in rich countries – offers a mixed picture of children’s health, skills and happiness. For far too many children, issues such as poverty, exclusion and pollution threaten their mental well-being, physical health and opportunities to develop skills. The evidence from 41 OECD and EU countries tells a comprehensive story: from children’s chances of survival, growth and protection, to whether they are learning and feel listened to, to whether their parents have the support and resources to give their children the best chance for a healthy, happy childhood. This report reveals children’s experiences against the backdrop of their country’s policies and social, educational, economic and environmental contexts.

This panel discussion, timed with the global launch of Report Card 16, comes at a moment when policy makers are asking deep questions about how to ensure child well-being in the light of one of the worst global pandemics in many decades. Our aim is to delve deeply into the findings of Report Card 16 to better understand how its findings may shape the increasingly uncertain world children are living in. We will also have an opportunity to examine how the comparative data in this and previous editions of Report Card can support policies for child well-being, looking at previous outcome-based indicators as well as newer context and conditions indicators which are presented in the latest edition of Report Card.

Confirmed panelists:

Mr. Nicolas Schmit, European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights

Ms. Denitsa Sacheva, Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Bulgaria

Ms. Rosemary Moodie, Senator, Canada

Mr. Fayaz King, Deputy Executive Director, Field Results and Innovation, UNICEF

Mr. Dominic Richardson, Chief of Social and Economic Policy, UNICEF Office of Research – Innocenti

The paradox of Barcelona today

Barcelona this summer is a city that shows the paradox between the beauty of the city, next to the sea, calm, serene, transparent Mediterranean sea water, you can breathe the calm of other longing times and to the west the green and leafy mountain range ... and on the other hand the longing of the life that offers of the small commerce (that generates 98% of the wealth of the city) that is closed, with posters that emphasize from the definitive closing of the business, the sale of the premises, premises for rent ... what a complex time ... but again the paradox: it is time to create new sustainable mechanisms for all, new jobs that include everyone, new social challenges, we have to create, we have to invent, we have to think , we have to prepare new structures ... it's time to be able to turn that destiny of the city that everyone in general, today, comments that it was excessive ... encouragement to all and strength to create !!!
